Diabetes and Knee Surgery Risks Infection Explained in New Study | The risk of infection due to knee surgery in diabetes

Diabetes and knee surgery: Diabetes patients have to get all the checkups done before undergoing any surgery. Surgery gets the green signal only after clearance of many doctors. It is believed that if a person has a sugar level control, then he does not have to face much problems in other treatment. Now a new study has surfaced, which has shown that diabetes can not only cause pain in the knees and severe damage to joints, but can also increase the risk of infection and blood clotting after knee replacement surgery.

The study found that people suffering from diabetes are 43 percent higher in the risk of peropastral joint infection in joints after knee surgery. Apart from this, the risk of deep vein thrombosis or DVT ie blood clotting is also 45 percent higher. DVT can lead to obstruction of lung arteries i.e. pulmonary embolism, which can also cause death. The rate of re -hospitalization in diabetes patients was also found to be 28 percent higher. Especially in diabetes patients taking insulin, 60 percent more difficulties were seen during and after surgery.

Study experts said that diabetes affects surgery, which affects physical functionality and quality of life. Poor blood sugar control spoils the results of surgery. This study suggested that diabetes patients need better blood sugar control and risk management strategies before surgery. The study has been published in the Journal of Orthopedics and has been concluded on the basis of systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

Researchers at Vardhman Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi have done this study. It also included experts from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and Fortis C-Dock Hospital. Researchers in research suggested that more intensive studies should be done in future to make standard guidelines for blood sugar control and develop better strategies to reduce the risk of surgery in diabetes patients. With this, patients will get better preparation and care before surgery, so that the difficulties can also be reduced.
